Any citizen in Shawnee or Jefferson County who is unable to leave their home without assistance qualifies as homebound.


When are Meals on Wheels delivered to the homes?
The meal is served during a mid-day delivery Monday through Friday.



How much does it cost to receive Meals on Wheels?

A moderate cost per day based on client income. Some clients are eligible for federal and state reimbursement.


Where are the meals prepared?
The meals are planned by the Meals on Wheels dietitian and prepared at Washburn Institute of Technology by Chartwells.


Who delivers the meals?
The agency depends on volunteers to deliver the meals.


What is the cost of the meals?
Each meal provided currently costs the agency $6.25.


Who pays for the meals?

Clients contribute according to ability, and the agency receives funding from the United Way of Greater Topeka, Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging, Kansas Department on Aging, City of Topeka, County Mill Levy, grants and private contributions.


Who governs the agency? How large is the staff?

Up to an eighteen member board of trustees governs the agency. The staff consists of seven full-time positions: a CEO, a CFO, a resource development director, a dietitian, a social worker, a volunteer coordinator, and an administrative assistant. There are 20 part-time employees (meal site directors, meal van drivers, and office clerical workers).
